Apply for a Recreation Scholarship

1. Check if you're pre-qualified

You're pre-qualified for a 25% or 50% discount if your child receives reduced or free school lunches and if you are a Grand Rapids resident. We just need proof that your child is eligible for free or reduced lunches. Be prepared to attach the proof of eligibility letter you received from either Grand Rapids Public Schools or the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 

You're also pre-qualified for a discount if your child is a foster child.

2. Gather your information

If you're not pre-qualified, be prepared to fill out information about your total monthly income before deductions including:

  • Wages of all working adult family members
  • Unemployment income
  • Income from the Family Independence Agency
  • Child support/Friend of the Court income
  • Worker's Compensation
  • Social Security
  • Pension
  • Academic Scholarships
  • Regular contributions from people who don't live in your household

Be prepared to attach proof of income documentation using any of the following that apply to your household:

  • Income Tax Returns
  • W2 Forms
  • DSS Form
  • SSI Form
  • Social Security Annual Statements
  • Unemployment Annual Statements

We keep your information confidential. Recreation program instructors don't know who has scholarship assistance. 

4. We'll review your application

5. Register your child for youth recreation programs

Once we approve your application, sign your child up for youth recreation programs for the reduced class fee.
