About the program
Our Shared Micromobility program is a transportation system that provides access to lightweight motorized vehicles for short-range urban mobility. It is designed to be affordable and convenient, reduce traffic, and provide multimodal transportation options for visitors and residents in Grand Rapids.
Veo is the City’s exclusive shared micromobility provider. Through a partnership between the City of Grand Rapids and Veo, 2,000 shared scooters are available across a 12‑mile service area. These services—including bicycles, e‑bikes, cargo bikes, and e‑scooters—also connect easily with other transportation modes such as transit, parking, park‑and‑ride, and ride‑sharing.
Shared micromobility first launched as a pilot in 2020 and was renewed as a long‑term program in 2022. From January 2022 through December 2024, community members took more than 1.2 million trips using shared micromobility in Grand Rapids, with over 360,000 people utilizing the service.
Ride Responsibly
- Keep sidewalks clear: Yield to pedestrians and park responsibly.
- Obey the rules of the road: follow all traffic signs, lane markings and signals
- Use hand signals to indicate turns, slowing or stopping
- Avoid entering the roadway without first stopping to look for vehicles
- Ride with the flow of traffic or in designated bike lanes; stay as far right as practical
- Don't ride more than two abreast in a single lane, and only if it doesn't interfere with the normal flow of vehicular traffic
- Protect your noggin: Stay safe. Wear a helmet. Wear visible clothing.
- Ride sober: Never ride under the influence. Ride predictably and defensively!
- Use a white front headlight and a red rear reflector after dark and in low-light conditions
How to Ride Veo
- Locate a ride: Riders aged 18+ can locate vehicles using the free Veo app. (No smartphone? Contact Veo customer service at (855) 836-2256 or email hello@veoride.com to register for non-smartphone access options)
- Unlock and go: Using the Veo app, riders scan a QR code!
- Pay $1 to unlock a vehicle, then $0.33 per minute to ride.
- End your ride in a designated location: Upon completion of the ride, riders must park in a Designated Parking Zone. Riders must take a photo within the app to confirm proper parking.

Program
Service Area
Mobile GR established a program service area that’s approximately 12 square miles. This equals about 27% of the city’s land area and 74% of the Neighborhoods of Focus. Roughly 95,000 people live in the service area, including portions of all Corridor Improvements Authorities and the boundaries of the Downtown Development Authority.
The program service area was based on the service area analysis completed as part of the Bike Share Feasibility Study. Users can only ride within the dedicated service area, as devices will automatically power down if taken outside its boundaries.
Equity & Affordability
The Neighborhoods of Focus include 17 Census Tracts identified in 2016 through Kellogg Foundation–funded research as areas with higher poverty and unemployment, and lower educational achievement. The service area covers 74% of these neighborhoods, and at least one-third of Veo’s active fleet is allocated to ensure reliable access to all users.
To support riders citywide, the City of Grand Rapids and Veo offer affordable pricing options through four programs: Veo Access, university discounts, VeoPlus discounts, and commuter memberships.
Accessibility
Grand Rapids now has access to a variety of vehicle types designed to support the diverse needs and preferences of the community:
- Cosmo: a seated scooter featuring large tires, a thumb throttle, and a low center of gravity for stability.
- Apollo: a throttle‑assisted e-bike built to help riders carry cargo.
- Rover: a self-balancing trike ideal for new riders or anyone who prefers extra stability.
Each vehicle includes components that enhance accessibility, such as throttles for non-pedal propulsion, comfortable seating for balance, low centers of gravity, and large tires for navigating uneven terrain.
