Signs

The Sign Ordinance exists to balance the need and right to communicate with needs to promote orderly communication, promote community aesthetics, prevent a proliferation of signs and sign structures that can be overwhelming, confusing, and distracting and to prevent the placement of signs and sign structures that can inhibit or impede safe travel.

All private property signage requires a permit.

If you are looking to install a new sign for your business or organization, need to re-face an existing sign, or want to place a temporary sign for short-term purposes, you will need to apply for a permit to make sure your sign meets our community’s standards as defined in the Grand Rapids Zoning Ordinance and the Michigan Building Code.

Do you need signage for a large project development area or integrated complex? You may want to apply for a Planned Sign Program.
