Apply for the Police Volunteer & Neighborhood Services Program

The Grand Rapids Police Department is offering an excellent opportunity for local residents to invest their time in a very unique volunteer program.

Members of the Volunteer & Neighborhood Services Program will help the GRPD by delivering critical services to our neighborhoods and relieving police officers of duties that are unrelated to crime.

Make sure you're eligible to apply

The minimum qualifications for appointment to the Volunteer & Neighborhood Services Program are:

  • Minimum age of 18 years old
  • Good Health
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Possession of a valid Michigan Driver's License
  • Successful completion of the background Investigation
  • Willingness to serve others

Review the program requirements

  • Volunteers will respond to requests for neighborhood services or other support duties in the department.
  • Volunteers will be paired up and assigned to one of the five patrol service areas in the city.
  • Volunteers are expected to commit a minimum of eight (8) hours every month, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM on weekdays.  Some weekend hours are available.
  • Volunteers will be issued uniforms, which can easily be identified by the public, and each shift volunteers are assigned to vehicles that are identified by the "Neighborhood Services" logo.
