File a Rental Registration Application Fee Complaint
Were you charged an application fee that was higher than the City's limit? Were you not provided with all the required information after you applied? You're in the right place to file a complaint.
1. Be prepared
The rental application fee ordinance requires landlords to provide you with certain information. We've also set a limit on the application fee amount.
We'll ask if you received any of the following from the landlord/property manager during your application process:
- Denial letter stating the reason(s) you didn't get the rental unit
- Written disclosure statement from the landlord with criteria they use to judge applications. This should include a description of the screening process and the contact information for the person/third party/agency that screens applications
- Written disclosure statement indicating the application fee and an itemized explanation of the costs and use of the application fee
We'll also ask if any of the following apply to you:
- The advertisement or posting for the rental unit(s) didn't indicate an application fee would be charged
- Your application was screened and the fee wasn't returned
- The amount you paid exceeded the cost of the screening process (as specified in the disclosure statement)
- The residential rental unit(s) you applied for weren't available or intended to be available and you didn't consent to being put on a waiting list
2. Locate the property owner/manager's information
The more information on the property owner/manager, the better. We'll need at least the rental unit address. We'll also ask for the property owner/manager's information, including their:
- Name
- Address
