File a Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) Affidavit
1. Check your PRE status
If you bought a home using a realtor, chances are they filed your PRE Affidavit for you. Before you file, check to see what the Assessor's records show:
- Call us and we'll tell you your status. Dial 311 or (616) 456-3000
- View your status online
2. Complete the Michigan Form 2368
The form you use to apply for this exemption is a State of Michigan form called the Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) Affidavit. The affidavit has to be filed with our office on or before June 1st to be applied to the current tax year. If you file after June 1st, it will be effective starting the following year.
You can fill out the form on your computer, but you'll need to print it and sign it before turning in the original to the City Assessor's office. Don't have a printer? You can pick up the form at our office, we're located at the address listed in the Contact Us section of this page.
3. Mail the form to our office
Mail your original affidavit to the address listed in the Contact Us section of this page.
4. We'll review your affidavit
If you're approved we'll update our records and your exemption will be applied based on when you filed. If you're denied, we'll mail you a letter to let you know.
