File a PRE Active Duty Military Affidavit
Are you a home owner currently serving in the U.S. armed forces? You may need to file this form while you're on deployment to keep your PRE.
1. Check if you're eligible
If you are going to be deployed but plan to rent or lease your home while you're gone, you can keep your PRE as long as these conditions are met:
- You're absent while on active duty in the armed forces of the United States
- The dwelling qualifies as your principal residence
- You file this form the Assessor's Office on or before May 1st, stating that you intend to occupy the dwelling as your principal residence upon completion of your active duty
2. Complete the Michigan Form 4660
The form you use to apply for this exemption is a State of Michigan form called the Principal Residence Exemption (PRE) Active Duty Military Affidavit. This form has to be filed by May 1st of the first year the exemption would normally be denied.
You can fill out the form on your computer, but you'll need to print it and sign it before turning in the original to the City Assessor's office. Don't have a printer? You can pick up the form at our office, we're located at the address listed in the Contact Us section of this page.
3. Mail or bring the form to our office
You have the option to complete the affidavit at our office. If you filled out the form at home and you're ready to submit, visit us at the address listed in the Contact Us section of this page. Our office hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
4. We'll review your affidavit
If you're approved we'll update our records and your exemption will remain on file. If you're denied, we'll mail you a letter to let you know.
