Mobile GR Traffic Safety

Creating a safe, welcoming, and accessible transportation system is a top priority for the City of Grand Rapids. Mobile GR works to ensure that everyone whether walking, biking, rolling, riding transit, or driving can travel safely on our streets, and sidewalks.

Our Commitment

Mobile GR is committed to making Grand Rapids streets safe for everyone, no matter how they travel. We focus on reducing crashes and injuries through better street design, traffic calming, and education. By working with schools, neighborhoods, and community partners, we strive to create an environment where walking, biking, riding transit, and driving are all safe and accessible choices. Our goal is a city where every trip is safe, equitable, and welcoming.

Safety Priorities

Vision Zero

Grand Rapids is committed to reducing serious injuries and fatalities on our streets. Through roadway design, enforcement, and education, we strive to create a safer environment for all travelers.

Driving Change campaign was established in 2010. The goal of this campaign is to reduce bicycle crashes by helping the people of Grand Rapids understand the new infrastructure and “rules of the road” that foster respect between motorists and bicycles and make us all safer. The Grand Rapids community has worked hard to pave the road with a robust cycling infrastructure that enhances our quality of life and creates safer places for people using all modes of transportation. But there’s more to be done.

Trucks

Truck Route Ordinance

The  City of Grand Rapids has a truck route ordinance to ensure the orderly operation of trucks on the streets within the City. There are four major considerations when evaluating truck routes in Grand Rapids:

1.) The safety of our citizens

2.) Avoidance of unreasonable or unnecessary disturbance or reduction in property values due to truck noise, vibration, and/or air pollution

3.) Protection against the deterioration of those streets not designated for truck traffic

4.) Adequate truck service to businesses and residences in an expeditious manner, having due regard for economical vehicle operation.
