Step 1.Make sure your passport is eligible for renewal

Your passport needs to meet certain conditions to be eligible for renewal:

  • It is undamaged and can be submitted with your application
  • It was issued when you were age 16 or older
  • It was issued within the last 15 years
  • It was issued in your current name or you can legally document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate or the government-issued document evidencing your legal name change.

If your passport doesn't meet all of the above conditions, you need to apply for a new one.

Step 3.Gather the required documents and attachments

You'll want to make sure that you send all the required documents with your application. You can see detailed instructions in the paper application you downloaded. Here's a look at what you need to send with your application:

  • Your most recent US passport book and/or card
  • A certified copy of your marriage certificate or court order if your name has changed
  • Fees
  • A recent, color photograph

You'll want to make sure your photo meets the State Department Passport Photo Requirements. Sending a photo that doesn't meet the standards could drastically delay your renewal.

Step 4.Review the passport fees

Please note that the US Department of State does not accept credit or debit card payments for passports.

  • Checks (personal, certified, cashier's, or traveler's)
