Effective on January 1st, 2025: The Gear Library will be offering its services to youth-serving organizations only. The Gear Library will no longer offer its services to the general public. Current family & Individual account holders may utilize their Gear Library memberships through the end of 2024.

Effective immediately: No new individual or family memberships may be started. Organized, youth-serving groups are still encouraged to contact us to inquire about Gear Library membership.

Who Qualifies as an Organized, Youth-Serving Group?

Groups must have some form of formal leadership and organization. Schools and non-profit organizations will immediately qualify. Contact us at gearlibrary@grcity.us or 616-250-6652 to inquire about eligibility.

Why is the Gear Library Transitioning to a Group-Only Service?

The Gear Library is shifting focus to meet the high demand from teachers, after-school programs, and non-profit organizations that work with children. Our experience shows that collaborating with youth-focused groups maximizes our impact and ensures our limited resources are used where they are most needed for positive outdoor experiences.

Analysis of our participation data over the past two years revealed that public-facing equipment lending consumed the most staff hours but had the lowest participant numbers. In contrast, our highest engagement came from working with organized youth-serving groups.

Will GR Outside Still Offer any Events or Courses to the Public?

Public events such as kayaking trips, $5 kayak rentals, and sledding will continue to be available through the Grand Rapids Department of Parks and Recreation. Stay updated on these opportunities via the Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Facebook, Instagram, and website.
