The City of Grand Rapids is seeking a City Engineer. Under the direction of the Deputy City Manager, the City Engineer leads a 44-member department, including Assistant City Engineers, Project Managers, and administrative and financial staff, overseeing an annual operating budget of $7–8 million and a multiyear capital program totaling $170–200 million. The role provides engineering leadership and consultation across city departments, reviews and approves plans and contracts, manages departmental budgeting, and represents the City before elected officials, public bodies, partner agencies, and the community. The ideal candidate is a collaborative, confident, and adaptable leader with experience delivering large, complex urban capital projects; excels in communication and public engagement; builds strong relationships with internal teams, developers, and stakeholders; navigates high-stakes situations with composure; and is committed to mentoring staff, succession planning, and continuous improvement.
