City refuse, recycle, and yard waste curbside services are delayed one day this week.
Have you received a phone call offering water service line insurance?
The Grand Rapids Water System doesn't endorse any service line insurance plan. This doesn't mean these companies and their insurance offerings aren't legitimate. The decision to buy this insurance is an individual one and depends on which risks a person is willing to accept. If you're considering buying this insurance, you should study the complete terms of the plan. Make sure that you're aware of what it does and does not cover.
If you have any questions about specific companies, you should contact the Better Business Bureau.
We're responsible for the part of your service located in the street. The street ends at the curb stop or shut-off valve. This is usually located at or near the property line. You're responsible for the service line from the curb stop to the water meter.
Data from 2009 and 2010 shows that across the Grand Rapids service area, 0.2 to 0.3 percent of water service lines have a break or a leak each year. This means that about one in every 400 service lines per year have a problem. Service lines made of a material other than copper, like plastic or lead, have more problems.
You can call the Development Center at 616-456-3041 to find out what you're service line is made of. If there's no information available, you might be able to find out by looking the pipe as it enters you basement or crawl space. If the pipe is plastic, it will probably be clear, blue, or black. If it's metal but soft enough to scratch with your fingernail or with a key, it's probably a lead pipe.
If you're having trouble finding out what your line is made of, contact a professional. Plumbers can get you this information and an estimate for replacement.
