Deputy Chief of Support Services Eric Freeman. This critical role ensures that firefighters have the all the necessary resources to work safely and effectively. He brings an impressive history of knowledge, common sense, and experience to the position.

Hired in 1991, Deputy Chief Freeman has held every position between firefighter and his current rank. Deputy Chief Freeman is the first African American advanced to this rank in GRFD’s 174-year history. This is a significant milestone, celebrated by the department and the City of Grand Rapids.

Deputy Chief Freeman serves the community with dedication and distinction. His responsibilities include oversight of the Fire Prevention Division, Personnel & Human Resources, Recruitment & Fire Cadet program, Promotions, Injury research and documentation, and to serve as duty chief on a rotating schedule.  Chief Freeman works to add value to all departmental programs and policies.
