Codes Enforced by Building Inspections

Public Act 230 of the State of Michigan dictates the building codes for all of Michigan with exception of the Fire Code and the Property Maintenance code. Below are the current codes enforced in Grand Rapids.

2015 Michigan Energy Code (MEC)

  • New and existing Residential construction shall comply with Chapter 5 of the MEC, chapter 13 of the MRC.
  • New Commercial construction shall comply with Chapter 4 of the MEC which directly references the 2013 ASHRAE 90.1 standard. “Commercial buildings shall comply with the requirements of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA 90.1-2013”
