Most city offices & the yard waste drop off site are closed Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day. Refuse, recycle, and yard waste curbside services are delayed one day that week.

The morning of April 4, 2022, there was a officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of Patrick Lyoya. 06-15-2022 Christopher Schurr Termination

The City Manager has confirmed Mr. Schurr’s termination effective June 10, 2022.

06-09-2022 Kent County Prosecutor's Decision

On 9 June 2022, the Kent County prosecutor changed Officer Christopher Schurr with 2nd-degree murder. City leaders reacted to the announcement in a press conference and gave the community an outline of the process going forward.

Present: Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, City Manager Mark Washington, Oversight and Public Accountability Director Brandon Davis, and Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom.

A media release was issued where Chief Winstrom confirmed the name already publicly circulating – Christopher Schurr – as the officer involved in the April 4 Officer Involved Shooting.

City Manager Mark Washington issued a statement that activists, community leaders, and the Lyoya family continue to call for calm and peace. Give yourself a little extra time for travel if you are coming downtown due to potential detours or traffic delays. We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the weekend to prioritize community safety and provide updates and direction as needed.

A media release was issued releasing several videos associated with the officer involved shooting on April 4. Videos include a critical incident briefing which incorporates eight of the nine source videos into a single incident timeline as events unfold.

04-13-2022 Chief Winstrom Press Conference Before Video Release

The afternoon of April 13, Chief Winstrom held a press conference providing additional context to the footage of the officer-involved shooting. Because of the sensitive and graphic content of the video, the presentation was livestreamed on the City’s YouTube channel with age restrictions in place.

On April 13, City Manager Mark Washington issued a statement assuring the community that there is no anticipation of any threats to people or property in the downtown area following this afternoon’s 3:00 PM video release.

On April 5, the City confirmed that the identity of the deceased person in the officer-involved shooting that occurred on April 4 is Patrick Lyoya.
