1. Check your eligibility
The property owner or an authorized property manager has to make any account changes. If you are renting, you should contact your landlord to discuss removing your name from the account. If you've contacted your landlord and are still having trouble, give us a call and we may be able to help.
2. Gather your information
Here is what you need to close your account:
- Proof of the property sale. You can submit a copy of your deed or settlement statement as long as it includes the date of the sale and both the buyer and seller's names. If you don't have these documents, check with your realtor.
- A time-stamped digital meter read image, if you do not want your final read estimated. We can also provide an actual read by our staff for a fee.
Reminder
- Regardless of the name on the account, charges for water and sewer services remain with the property. If left unpaid, the charges will be added to the property owner's property taxes (a lien will be placed on the property). Click here for more information on Michigan's lien law.
3. Review the Rules and Regulations
Make sure you take a look at the City of Grand Rapids Water Systems Rules and Regulations for any lingering questions or clarifications needed.
4. Complete the online form
5. We'll review your form
Expect to hear from us within 7-10 business days, either with confirmation that your account is closed, or to request more information.
