Summary
This is a signs and pavement markings project that does not involve pavement resurfacing or reconstruction. This project proposes to convert the outside travel lanes on Ann Street across the Grand River to separated bicycle lanes to complete an east-west gap in the City’s bicycle network. Currently there are bicycle facilities on Ann Street between Turner and Alpine to the west and between Monroe and Plainfield to the east.
This proposed project would also connect with existing north-south bicycle lanes on Monroe and Turner and the Grand River Edges Trail north (existing trail) and south (trail scheduled for construction) of Ann Street.
Proposed Changes
Ann Street NW between Monroe Ave and Turner Ave currently has two travel lanes in each direction plus dedicated turn lanes at Monroe, the US-131 exit, and Turner Ave.
This project proposes to convert the outside two lanes to separated bicycle lanes:
- One travel lane in each direction plus left and right turn lanes, where needed, will be maintained.
- There is no parking along Ann Street between Monroe and Turner, so there are no impacts to on-street parking.
- Painted buffers between the bicycle lanes and travel lanes.
Staff is currently reviewing options to possibly add vertical separation between the lanes to reduce improper use of the bicycle lanes and buffers by motor vehicle operators and to enhance user safety and comfort.
