Apply for a Sidewalk Builder's License

Need to do work in the Right-of-Way and don't have a Sidewalk Builder's License?  We'll guide you through the license application.

Paso 1.Determine if you need a license

This license will allow you to do the following work in the Right-of-Way:

  • Sidewalk
  • Driveway Approach
  • Retaining Wall
  • Curb or curb and gutter
  • Areaway construction or repair
  • Any other work that will be in the right-of-way

Paso 2.Gather your information

Are you a first time applicant? You'll first need to schedule a written exam. These can be scheduled between 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Call us at the number listed in the Contact Us section. Once you pass, provide us with the following documentation:

  • Three references from past concrete work
  • A current $10,000 Surety Bond
  • A current Certificate of Liability Insurance. Certificate must include the City of Grand Rapids as additional insured and insures against liability
  • $98 license fee payment

Are you looking to renew your license? Provide us with the following:

  • A current $10,000 Surety Bond
  • A current Certificate of Liability Insurance. Certificate must include the City of Grand Rapids as additional insured and insures against liability
  • License fee payment
    •  $70.00 if your license is current
    • $87.50 if your license expired less than 31 days
    • $98.00 if your license expired more than 31 days ago

Paso 3.Have your credit/debit card ready

You'll need to enter your credit/debit card information to pay the license fee. We accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover. 

Paso 5.We'll review your application

You can expect to hear back from us within 10 business days.
