Check if you're eligible

To qualify for this exemption, you'll have to own and occupy the property as of December 31st prior to the year you want to be exempt. There are multiple types of organizations that may qualify, as stated in Michigan Law. These are the types of exempt organizations:

  • Nonprofit housing for elderly or disabled families 211.7d
  • Nonprofit theater, library, educational, or scientific institution 211.7n
  • Charitable institutions (including homes for the chronically ill) 211.7o
  • Memorial homes or Posts 211.7p
  • Youth organizations 211.7q
  • Nonprofit clinics 211.7r
  • Houses of public worship 211.7s

Gather your documentation

Submit a copy of these documents for each organization occupying the property, along with your application:

  • Articles of Incorporation
  • By-Laws
  • any pamphlet or other information or literature describing the functions of the organization
  • previous 3 years of Income Tax filings, including 990 forms
  • all leases including sub-leases in effect at the subject property during the calendar year.
  • instrument by which property was acquired (warranty deed, quit claim deed, land contract, or bill of sale)

Complete the application

Your application has to be filed no later than the second Monday in March. You won't need to file more than once, the exemption is continuous unless you sell the property or your business no longer qualifies.
