Paso 1.Review the banner requirements before applying

Make sure to start the process early. We recommend checking availability at least a month before you want to hang your banner. Use a sign or printing contractor. This process can be difficult to do on your own. 

Banner timing and payment:

• You'll need to submit your application at least 14 days in advance but no more than 1 year in advance.
• We issue permits for 2 month periods.
• It costs $50.00 for each 2 month period you apply for, and you can hang as many banners as you want.
• You should send cash or a check to pay for your permit. Write checks to the Grand Rapids City Treasurer.

Banners restrictions:

• No political banners
• No advertisements for a product
• No reflective banners or banners with flashing lights
• No banners that attempt to direct or influence street traffic in any way.
• No banners that obstruct traffic signals or signs.

Paso 2.Decide where you want to hang your banner

Decide which light pole you want to hang your banner(s) on.

To check availability, give us a call at the number listed in the Contact Us section. Expect a call back from the City within three business days.

Paso 3.Design your banner

It's a good idea to review the banner specifications. After you choose an available light pole, your contractor will check the size of your banner to see if you need extra hardware.

If you want to make your own banner, give us a call.
