Apply to Divide Property

1. Make sure you don't owe taxes, liens, or fees for the properties

We check for dues owed on all properties involved in an application. We can't review your application until you pay all dues owed on the properties. Contact the City Treasurer's office at 616-456-3020 to find out if you owe.

2. Make sure you have all the required information

Gather the following information/documents:

• You can apply on behalf of a property owner. You need a letter from the property owner giving you permission
• An existing survey of the property – (you may need to hire a surveyor for an official survey)
• A survey of the property with the proposed changes (aka resulting survey).  This is required for property divisions or boundary line changes
• Existing parcel numbers for all involved properties. If you need help locating the parcels use the Kent County Parcel Map
• Existing street address for all involved properties
• If you would like to request assignment of specific addresses, identify those addresses. We'll also need the number of houses/apartments/units/suites that would use each address. Keep residential and commercial units separate
• Any applicable deed restrictions that would make a proposed/resulting survey non-buildable
• For land divisions only, complete the Notice to Assessor of Transfer of the Right to Make a Division of Land application. Identify the number of division rights to transfer to each resulting parcel
• Proof of ownership. If you bought the property recently, check our Assessor’s records to see if you show as the property owner. If not, you'll need to submit proof of ownership with the application
• Have the City of Grand Rapids Treasurer certify the Lien Search form (found in the Land Division Application) for each property involved. This certifies that there are no outstanding amounts owed on the properties involved

3. Be ready to pay your fees

We base the fee on the number of resulting parcels. We accept cash, check or money order. Checks can be made payable to City of Grand Rapids.

4. Complete the application

5. Send in your completed form

Mail in or drop off your original completed application to our office. Find our contact information in the Contact Us section of this page. Keep in mind that we don't accept copies. 

6. We’ll review your application

After we receive your completed application, expect to hear from us within 45 days
