Register as a Licensed Contractor
Looking to register a state-issued license or apply for a boiler license? Good choice! This will allow you to start applying for permits as a contractor in Grand Rapids. The City issues certain mechanical licenses. The State of Michigan issues most other contractor licenses. Follow these steps if you haven’t previously registered your license with the City of Grand Rapids.

City License Examinations
You'll need a city license to apply for permits as a contractor. The first step is to sign up for a license exam. Have you already passed the license exam for the license you need? Skip to step 4.
All city licenses have a license exam and a license exam fee. Find the license exam you need to take from the list below for more information and to apply online:
Application Review
After you complete the application process we'll review your application. Expect your updated license or registration card by mail within 2 weeks of receipt of your application. Keep in mind that you might need to revise your application or attachment if we notice any missing or incorrect information.
