Police Department issues reminder of City’s Teen Curfew Ordinance
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – As we approach the end of the school year and the start of summer activities, the Grand Rapids Police Department asks that young people and parents be aware of the City's curfew ordinance and the hours that young people can be out in public unsupervised.
City of Grand Rapids Curfew Ordinance:
- Children under 12 need to be in by 10 p.m.
- Children aged 12 to 15 need to be in by 11 p.m.
- 16- and 17-year-olds need to be in by 12 a.m. (midnight)
The curfew ordinance does not apply when a minor is accompanied by a parent or guardian. Adults designated by the parent or guardian may also be with the child.
Children found in violation of the curfew ordinance could face up to 90 days in juvenile detention and/or be fined up to $500. Parents will be contacted and must come pick up their child from custody. Officers won’t take the children to their home to release them to a parent.
Parents and/or guardians who allow children to be in a public place in violation of the curfew law could also be arrested and/or fined. If found in violation, the misdemeanor is punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine of not more than $500.
“This is also a good time to remind teens and families that riders under 18 are not allowed to operate the City’s e-scooters and e-bikes and for everyone to remember that these devices are not allowed to operate on sidewalks in the downtown area,” said Deputy Chief P.J. Baker. “We want residents and visitors alike to enjoy all the things Grand Rapids has to offer this summer, and that starts with recognizing that everyone has a role in keeping our community safe."
