The City of Grand Rapids’ Mobile GR Department deploys a variety of temporary traffic installations throughout the city each year. These installations help collect data, improve safety, test traffic patterns, and support community events. Our goal is to make data-driven decisions that enhance mobility and safety for everyone who uses Grand Rapids streets.
Each year, we deploy more than 200 temporary traffic monitoring devices to collect real-world data on how people drive, bike, and walk in Grand Rapids. The data helps guide decisions on crosswalk improvements, speed management, and infrastructure planning.
Types of Traffic Counters and Tools:
Turning Movement Counter – Records vehicle and pedestrian turning movements at intersections to help determine the need for Crossing Guards or All-Way Stops.
Handheld Speed Radar – Used for speed studies and public demonstrations to measure driver speeds in real time.
Speed Trailers – Portable radar displays that show drivers their speed to encourage safer driving behavior.
Tube Counter – Measures vehicle volume, speed, and classification during warmer months using pneumatic tubes.
Radar Counter – Provides year-round data on traffic volume and speed without the need for road contact.
Miovision Camera System – Offers detailed, camera-based traffic data to analyze travel behavior and intersection performance
When road work, events, or emergencies require changes to normal traffic patterns, Mobile GR deploys temporary traffic control devices to keep everyone safe and informed. These installations ensure that drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians can navigate safely around temporary closures or detours.
Common Barricade Types:
Type 3 Barricade – Used for high-volume or high-profile road closures.
Type 2 Barricade – Used primarily for sidewalk or smaller work zone closures.
Type 1 Barricade – Used for low-volume or short-duration closures.
Orange Water-Filled Barrier – Separates vehicle lanes from pedestrian or work areas.
Strongwall Barrier – Guides or diverts traffic through temporary work zones.
Barrels, Verticades, and Grabber Cones – Used to redirect vehicle flow.
Traffic Cones – Used for short-term lane adjustments or event traffic control.
Caution Tape – Used for low-impact closures or to restrict temporary access.
Temporary markings and signs help guide construction crews, maintain safety during projects, and ensure compliance with parking and access needs.
Types of Markings and Signs:
Plot Marks – Used to direct painting or construction crews.
Miss Dig Markings – Identify underground utilities to prevent damage during projects.
Temporary Tape – Used in place of paint for short-term lane or crosswalk markings.
No Parking (NP) Lawn Signs & Tripods – Restrict parking for up to 24 hours during work or events.
Portable Stop Signs – Deployed when a traffic signal is out or during emergency operations.
Mobile GR also supports special projects and public safety campaigns that promote responsible driving, walking, and biking behaviors throughout the city.

Traffic Safety Mascot & Street Banners – Raising awareness of traffic safety rules downtown.
Crosswalk Enforcement Campaigns – Partnering with the Grand Rapids Police Department to encourage safe driver behavior at pedestrian crossings.
MiCareerQuest Participation – Educating students about traffic operations and city careers.
Stationary Speed Feedback Signs – Placed at key locations to remind drivers to slow down.
DASH Stop Adjustments – Temporary relocation or updates to DASH bus stops to support events or construction.
Parklets & Social Zones – Temporary reallocation of curb space for community use.
Election Sign Management – Placement and removal coordination to maintain visibility and safety.
Temporary traffic installations play a vital role in helping us understand mobility patterns, test new ideas, and maintain safety across our transportation network.
