Lead Hazard Control
We are working to end childhood lead poisoning in Grand Rapids. That is why we offer property owners up to $20,000 in assistance to remove lead hazards from their homes.
Eligible Homes
- Located in the City of Grand Rapids
- Built before 1978
- Owner-occupied homes or one- to four-unit rental properties
- Vacant rental units may also qualify
There are different eligibility requirements for homeowners and rental property owners. You can see these guidelines below.
Homeowner Eligibility
- Own and occupy the home
- Household income is within Annual Income Limits
- A child birth through age five or a pregnant person lives in the home, or a child birth through age five receives childcare in the home

Rental Property Owner Eligibility
- Tenant household income is within Annual Income Limits
- Tenant households include a child birth through age five or a pregnant person
- All past-due debt to the City (taxes, fines, fees) are paid
- Pay a co-pay of 10% of the cost to remove the lead (minimum co-pay is $300)
- Properties must be marketed to families with young children, at affordable rents for at least 3 years after the work is done
- Rental property owners or their staff must become EPA-Certified Renovators. If you need this training, call the Rental Property Owners Association at 616-454-3385.

Become a Lead Abatement Contractor
Is your business interested in bidding on City lead hazard control projects? The City of Grand Rapids may be able to assist you in getting ready.
