City urges fireworks safety ahead of Memorial Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With Memorial Day weekend approaching, the City of Grand Rapids is reminding community members to handle fireworks safely. The Grand Rapids Fire Department says fireworks can be dangerous to people, pets and property, especially in crowded neighborhoods or areas with dry grass or brush.

“Fireworks can cause serious damage if they’re not used responsibly,” Fire Marshal Bill Smith said. “We want everyone to enjoy the holiday safely and avoid accidents.”

Fireworks ordinance reminder

The City allows consumer fireworks only during certain times around specific holidays. For Memorial Day weekend, fireworks are allowed only on the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day, and only until 11:45 p.m.

Violating the fireworks ordinance can lead to a civil fine of up to $1,000 for each offense.

The use of fireworks is limited to the following dates and times annually:

  • Dec. 31 until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1
  • The Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day until 11:45 p.m.
  • June 29 through July 4 until 11:45 p.m. each day
  • July 5, but only if it falls on a Friday or Saturday, until 11:45 p.m.
  • The Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day until 11:45 p.m. each day

Fireworks safety tips

To help prevent injuries and fires, the GRFD recommends:

  • Read and follow all instructions on fireworks.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby.
  • Never let children handle fireworks. Sparklers burn hot enough to cause serious burns.
  • Never point fireworks at people, animals or buildings.
  • Use fireworks on a flat, stable surface away from homes, dry grass and anything that can burn.
  • Never try to relight a “dud.” Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water.
  • Do not light fireworks in glass or metal containers.
  • Keep unused fireworks away from lit ones.
  • Clean up debris before going to bed and make sure smoke alarms work.

“By following safety guidelines and respecting local laws, we can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend,” Smith said.
