GRFD invites community members to apply for firefighter positions, cadet roles and youth academy opportunities; open houses scheduled to help candidates prepare
Fire Department opens recruitment – Applications start March 1
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The City of Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) is launching its 2026 firefighter recruitment process, offering residents the chance to serve their community and join one of Michigan’s most respected and accredited fire departments.
Applications for firefighter positions will open March 1 and close May 30. GRFD will also accept applications for Fire Cadet positions – a four-month paid opportunity – and the Fire Youth Academy, a one-week summer program for teens ages 15–18.
To help interested candidates prepare, the department will host a series of recruitment open houses featuring presentations on the hiring process, interview tips from a deputy chief and the chance to try parts of the physical agility course. These events will take place at East Leonard Elementary School on six dates between now and May, offering valuable insight and hands-on experience for anyone considering a career in fire service.

Open Houses – Learn How to Prepare
GRFD will host a series of open houses to help candidates prepare for the hiring process. Attendees will receive tips from a deputy chief, learn what to expect during testing and interviews and even try parts of the physical agility course.

Fire Youth Academy
The Fire Youth Academy is a one-week summer program for students ages 15–18 who live in Kent County. Participants will experience hands-on training similar to a real Fire Academy, including:
- Using Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
- Search and rescue drills
- Fire hose and extinguisher operations
- Hands-only CPR
- Team-building and fitness activities
