Grand Rapids calls for community ideas to reduce violence  

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Safe Alliances for Everyone (SAFE) Task Force is asking residents and organizations to share new programming ideas to help reduce violence in Grand Rapids. The group will award funding at its next Pitch and Highlight Night on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

Local nonprofits and individuals can apply for the chance to pitch their ideas. Those selected will present on Oct. 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the MLK Park Community Center, 900 Fuller Ave. SE. Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 23 at https://forms.grandrapidsmi.gov/Oversight-and-Public-Accountability/SAFE-Pitch-and-Highlight-Night-Application. The online application form may also be accessed through the official SAFE Task Force page on the City’s website at SAFE Task Force | City of Grand Rapids, Michigan. 

Applicants can receive up to $10,000 to launch their violence reduction projects. Five winners will be chosen to partner with the City and carry out their proposals. Each participant selected to pitch their idea will have five minutes to explain how their idea will reduce violence, create pro-social opportunities or address mental health issues facing youth in Grand Rapids. 

“We know strong, lasting solutions come from the people who live, work, and play in our neighborhoods,” said Latesha Lipscomb, civilian violence prevention and intervention manager for the City’s Office of Oversight and Public Accountability. “Pitch Night gives residents a meaningful opportunity to shape safety in Grand Rapids. When we support local leaders and elevate their ideas, we foster hope, build trust, and create safer spaces for everyone.” 

Projects must work to reduce violence or gun violence in Grand Rapids, focus on youth ages 15 to 24, and take place between March and September 2027. 

Applicants must also show how their work supports the goals of the SAFE Task Force, the Police Department’s Strategic Plan, or the City’s Strategic Plan.
