Fire Department launches second outreach to city businesses for Firefighter Right-to-Know compliance

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Fire Department (GRFD) is mailing notices to all businesses across the city, marking the second phase of its firefighter right-to-know reporting cycle. This initiative ensures businesses comply with Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) and Michigan Fire Prevention Code requirements to disclose hazardous chemicals on-site under Michigan State Fire Marshal Bulletin 9 and Section 5p of Act 207 of 1941.

Each letter includes a QR code, directing business owners/operators to a quick, mobile-friendly submission form.

GRFD began this self-reporting process a few months ago. Many business owners responded successfully, helping improve firefighter and community safety. This mailing targets locations that haven't yet participated.

“It’s easy to do and only takes about five minutes to complete.” The enhanced digital process is designed to reduce paperwork and expedite compliance. This is a lawful requirement that reduces risk to our community, our residents and our firefighters. We appreciate everyone’s willingness to assist,” said Fire Marshal Bill Smith.

Under Michigan’s Fire Prevention Code (Act 207), firms handling hazardous chemicals must upon request, provide fire chiefs with:

  • A list of materials and their Safety Data Sheets (SDS),
  • Descriptions of chemical quantities and locations.

The survey submission aligns with MIOSHA’s firefighter right-to-know mandate, ensuring emergency responders are well-informed before entering certain facilities.

Why It Matters

  • Enhanced Firefighter Safety: Access to onsite chemical data helps firefighters correctly assess and respond to incidents.
  • Community Protection: Knowing where hazardous materials are stored benefits residents and first responders alike.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Staying in compliance helps avoid potential penalties and boosts operational readiness.

What Business Owners Need to Do

  1. Scan the QR code in the letter mailed to your business address.
  2. Complete the brief form—takes only five minutes.
  3. The GRFD Fire Prevention Division will review the submittals and contact businesses that may require an on-site inspection.

This second outreach is part of GRFD’s commitment to collaborating with local businesses to enhance public safety and ensure regulatory compliance.
