City of Grand Rapids reopens RFP timeline for Gun Violence Memorial art installation

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The City of Grand Rapids has reopened its Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Gun Violence Memorial Art Installation Project, extending the submission window to better support artists and ensure an accessible, community‑centered process.

Officials say that while the original timeline was designed to complement ArtPrize programming, feedback from participating artists indicated that the overlap created competing priorities and limited their ability to fully engage with the project. In response, the City has adjusted the schedule to allow all artists — new and returning — to thoughtfully review the RFP and submit their proposals. Artists who previously applied are asked to resubmit online, and the revised submission period will run from Sept. 28 through Oct. 16 at 4 p.m.

The Gun Violence Memorial Art Installation is a key part of the City’s continuing work to support healing, reflection and community awareness. The memorial will honor the lives impacted by all forms of gun violence, including interpersonal, domestic and street violence, as well as unjust shootings.

“The artwork will serve as a public reminder of the deep losses felt by families and neighborhoods across Grand Rapids,” said Brandon Davis, managing director of the Office of Public Accountability (OPA) & Office of Equity and Engagement (OEE). “It will also offer residents a meaningful space to come together, reflect and encourage further dialogue around prevention and safer communities.”

Building on this emphasis on collective reflection and community dialogue, Latesha Lipscomb, the City’s civilian violence prevention and intervention manager, highlighted the ongoing, personal impact of gun violence and the need for a space that honors those experiences.

“The effects of gun violence are not momentary—they stay with families, friends, and entire communities long after the headlines disappear,” said Lipscomb. “Through this memorial, we’re creating a place where all of Grand Rapids can come together, honor those we’ve lost, and support one another in the long path of healing.”

Artists are asked to propose a three‑dimensional or mixed‑media piece suitable for both indoor and outdoor display. The final sculpture must be durable, thoughtfully designed, and able to be delivered and installed by no more than two people. A pedestal or base, storage container and installation instructions must also be included. Once completed, the artwork becomes the property of the City of Grand Rapids.

A selection committee made up of survivors, families affected by gun violence, SAFE Task Force members and representatives from the Grand Rapids Police Department will review all proposals and recommend the submission that best meets the project’s goals and reflects the experiences of those impacted.

The project budget may not exceed $20,000 and must cover all expenses needed to complete the work, including materials, labor and any related activities.
