Food Waste

Did you know that over 1/3 of the material that is sent to the landfill is organic material that can be composted and turned into new soil? We are doing something about it!

in 2026, the City of Grand Rapids launched the Renew Grand Rapids program! This is a food scrap drop off program that is available to all City of Grand Rapids residents at no out of pocket cost. We collect the food scraps and turn it into compost with our Green Mountain Technology composting machine at the yard waste drop off site. Then we return the completed compost back to the community.

We are utilizing blue-tooth enabled MetroStor bins through the MetroKey App. There are currently 7 bins across the city with 24/7 access for food scrap drop off. For more information on the program and how to sign up, click the link below.
