City again places among America’s top run municipalities, earning No. 27 nationally
Grand Rapids named best managed city in Michigan in 2026 WalletHub report
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids is officially the No. 1 best‑managed city in Michigan, according to WalletHub’s newly released 2026 Best‑ & Worst‑Run Cities in America report. The City also ranked 27th nationwide, continuing its strong performance in the annual operating‑efficiency study of 148 large U.S. cities.
WalletHub evaluates how effectively cities deliver public services relative to their budgets. Grand Rapids’ placement reflects its consistent strength in responsible financial management, high‑quality municipal services, and long‑term strategic planning.
The study generated a “Quality of City Services” score based on 36 metrics across six categories — financial stability, education, health, safety, economy and infrastructure — and then compared that score with each city’s total budget per capita. Grand Rapids ranked 34th in Quality of City Services and 37th in Total Budget per Capita, placing the City solidly among the top performers nationwide.
Mayor David LaGrand said the ranking reflects the dedication of City employees and the community they serve.
“Being recognized again as one of America’s best‑run cities is a testament to the people who show up every day committed to making Grand Rapids stronger. Our team works with purpose, and our community partners help us move forward together.”
City Manager Mark Washington said the results underscore the City’s commitment to data‑driven decision‑making and responsible stewardship of public resources.
“Managing limited resources while meeting the diverse needs of residents is always a challenge. Maintaining our position among the nation’s best‑run cities shows that our team continues to make thoughtful, informed choices that protect taxpayers and improve quality of life.”
WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo noted in the report that top‑ranked cities demonstrate strong fiscal discipline and effective service delivery.
“The best‑run cities use their budgets most effectively to provide high‑quality financial security, education, health, safety and transportation,” Lupo wrote. “Many of the top performers also maintain low debt per capita, helping prevent future financial trouble.”
City leaders highlighted several ongoing initiatives contributing to Grand Rapids’ strong performance:
Advancing transformational capital projects that are reshaping the city’s physical and economic landscape, including the Acrisure Amphitheater’s first full operating year, continued development of the Amway Soccer Stadium, Grand River restoration work, and new trail and mobility connections that strengthen placemaking and urban vitality.
Strategic, equity‑focused budget investments aligned with the FY2027 Fiscal Plan and the City’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, supporting priorities in governmental excellence, economic prosperity and affordability, health and environment, mobility, safe community, and engaged and connected community.
Sustained commitment to housing and neighborhood stability, with continued progress on housing developments in every ward and investments that support affordability, homelessness response and neighborhood reinvestment.
Strengthening public safety and community well‑being, including fully staffing authorized police positions, expanding mental health co‑response partnerships and continuing violence‑reduction initiatives.
Major infrastructure and core service investments, including water and wastewater system upgrades, street and sidewalk rehabilitation, and long‑term asset management planning that supports daily life and economic growth.
Organizational effectiveness and customer service improvements, including ERP optimization, technology modernization, and enhanced transparency in budgeting, performance reporting and community engagement.
Disciplined long‑term financial planning, maintaining strong financial policies, stable reserves, and a reduced millage rate while navigating inflationary pressures, expiring federal resources, and evolving state and federal funding conditions.
