Milestone West Side gateway signage and Michigan Street pedestrian safety projects set to begin construction
Corridor Improvement Authorities drive major infrastructure and safety upgrades for business districts
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The City of Grand Rapids today announced that two long-envisioned infrastructure projects are officially beginning construction. The two include a multi-district gateway signage initiative across the West Side and critical pedestrian safety enhancements along the Michigan Street corridor.
West Side Corridor Improvement Authority (WSCIA): Gateway Signage Project. After years of visioning and dedicated community advocacy, construction is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks on three iconic gateway arches. Installed across the West Side’s three primary business districts: Stockbridge, West Fulton and Leonard. These entry markers will establish a cohesive identity, celebrate the area’s rich culture, and welcome residents, visitors and shoppers to the corridor. This $1.7 million project reflects the Boards’ long-term dedication to district beautification and placemaking goals. The installation projects are anticipated to conclude next spring.
Michigan Street Corridor Improvement Authority (MSCIA): Pedestrian Safety Improvements. As a high-traffic destination renowned for its vibrant dining and nightlife scene, walkability and pedestrian safety are essential to Michigan Street’s economic vitality. Partnering with the City’s Mobile GR department, the MSCIA seized an opportunity to expand upon a grant-funded Mobile GR project. By integrating additional street safety measures alongside newly planned pedestrian flashing beacons, the joint effort directly addresses critical corridor safety needs while maximizing municipal resources. This $75,000 construction project is anticipated for completion in November.
While key infrastructure projects like gateway signs and safety upgrades highlight high-visibility investments, Grand Rapids’ CIAs continue to drive daily economic vitality through localized programming, business district events and business support initiatives.
The successful launch of these two projects demonstrates a renewed, proactive approach from the Economic Development Department to lower administrative hurdles, facilitate cross-departmental alignment such as the partnership with Mobile GR, and empower CIA boards to realize their community development plans effectively.
"These upcoming projects mark a pivotal turning point in how the City partners with our local corridor improvement authorities," said Verah Narh Kamara, senior advisor of corridor improvement authorities. "By coordinating our internal resources and streamlining interdepartmental operations, we are putting the full weight of the City behind the vision that community and business leaders have built for their corridors. This is just the starting point for what strong, aligned partnerships can achieve."
