Area 2 Parking Access Detoured
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Oakes Street SW between Ionia and Grandville avenues will close Tuesday, April 17 for the remainder of the spring and summer months. The contractor will reopen Cherry Street on Monday, April 16 prior to closing Oakes as part of the next phase of utility and road work tied to the Studio Park development.
Posted detours for the Oakes Street closure include Grandville to Cherry to Ionia for eastbound traffic and Oakes to Ionia to Cherry to Grandville for westbound traffic.
The City’s Mobile GR and Parking Services Department has alerted Area 2 parking lot customers that the planned closure will detour access to the lot. Once the road closure begins, monthly customers who park in Area 2 will have access through the Area 3 entrance on Ionia Ave. Area 2 customers will follow the signage and temporary ramps to access Area 2. Van Andel Arena event suiteholders will continue to have reserved spaces in Area 2.
In anticipation of the Studio Park development – set to break ground this month or May – the City continues to make changes to surrounding streets. Road work will continue through late summer and resume next year. Planned changes include removing the northbound and southbound U.S. 131 business routes between Cherry and Oakes streets and extending Ottawa between Cherry and Oakes.
The tentative schedule for remaining phases is as follows:
Phase 3: April – July
Part 1 (week of April 16) – Oakes between Grandville and Ionia will be closed for sanitary sewer, water main, street lighting, sidewalk and landscaping work.
Part 2 (estimated early May) – Northbound Ottawa between Oakes and Weston will be closed for sanitary sewer work.
Phase 4: August
Ionia between Cherry and Oakes will be closed for utility work.
Phase 5: August – September
Cherry between U.S. 131 business routes and Ionia will be closed for storm sewer, street lighting and street widening work.
The addition of a new segment of Ottawa between Oakes and Cherry will bring street lighting, sidewalk and landscaping work. No street detours are anticipated for this phase of construction.

The $110 million Studio Park project will include a movie theater, hotel, apartments, office space and parking ramp in Phase I. A future $30 million Phase II would include a residential tower constructed above the parking ramp.
