Oakes Street reopens and Ionia Avenue SW set to close Thursday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Ionia Avenue SW between Oakes Street and Cherry Street will close early Thursday, Aug. 9 for roughly three weeks as part of the next phase of utility connections tied to the Studio Park development. Contractors also will complete the work on Oakes Street and reopen it Thursday to eastbound and westbound traffic.

Posted detours for the Ionia Avenue closure include eastbound and westbound travel on Oakes and Cherry and northbound and southbound travel on Grandville and Commerce avenues.

In anticipation of the Studio Park development, the City continues to make changes to surrounding streets. Road work will continue through late summer and resume next year. Planned changes in-clude removing the northbound and southbound U.S. 131 business routes between Cherry and Oakes streets and extending Ottawa between Cherry and Oakes.

The $110 million Studio Park project will include a movie theater, hotel, apartments, office space and parking ramp in Phase I. A future $30 million Phase II would include a residential tower constructed above the parking ramp.
