City taps brakes on parking changes to assess efforts, consider input

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The City of Grand Rapids is tapping the brakes on staff-initiated changes to on- and off-street parking management and rates following the implementation of a series of parking and mobility solutions over the past few years. 

“Given the number of changes over this period, we need to pause and evaluate these efforts before initiating additional changes,” City Manager Mark Washington said. “I want to be very thoughtful and deliberate about our mobility strategies as we contemplate future solutions to meet the mobility and transportation needs of our growing community.”

Washington has issued a moratorium on staff-initiated parking management and rate changes, saying he needs time to work with Mobile GR and Parking Services staff to establish strategic priorities for the Fiscal Year 2020 proposed budget.

“During this time, we will continue to evaluate and implement requested parking changes initiated by neighborhoods, businesses and developers,” he said. “We also will use this time to consider the important input received by the Mobile GR Commission over the past months, including feedback on the recent parking rate and demand study.”

Mobile GR and Parking Services recently has introduced the following solutions:
