City schedules City Clerk finalist interviews and public meet & greet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A City Commission subcommittee has decided to advance all three city clerk candidates to the second and final round of interviews. The finalists – Byron Township Clerk Joel Hondorp, Montcalm County Clerk Kristen Millard and Chicago Heights, Ill., City Clerk Lori Wilcox – also will participate in a public meet and greet. The subcommittee is comprised of Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and Commissioners Senita Lenear and Kurt Reppart. 

The meet and greet will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 28 in the ninth-floor Commission Chambers at City Hall, 300 Monroe Ave. NW. Light refreshments will be served. The City Commission will conduct second-round interviews of the finalists at 9 a.m. Thursday, March 29 in the Commission Chambers. The open house and second interviews are open to the public. Parking is available in the Government Center Ramp off Monroe and Ottawa avenues.

The City Commission expects to select a city clerk following the interviews. The position was vacated by Darlene O’Neal, who retired in February. Here is a breakdown of the candidates:

Joel Hondorp
Joel Hondorp has served as Byron Township’s clerk since 2000. Before that, he was an elected Bryon Township trustee. He also serves as an on-call firefighter with the Byron Township Fire Department. Hondorp received a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Michigan Political Leadership Program certification from Michigan State University.

Kristen Millard
Kristen Millard has served as Montcalm County’s clerk since 1997. She previously served as deputy clerk/bookkeeper for Ionia County. Millard is an active member of the Michigan Association of County Clerks, earning its County Clerk of the Year designation in 2015. She has an associate’s degree in sales and marketing from Davenport College of Business.

Lori Wilcox
Lori Wilcox has served as the city clerk/collector of the City of Chicago Heights, Ill., since 2011. Before that, she was the library media and technology integration specialist/parent involvement coordinator at Chicago International Charter School-Lloyd Bond Campus. Wilcox received her master’s degree in education and technology integration from American Intercontinental University. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in English and communications from Western Illinois University.
