Would you like to be a Hydrant Hero? You're in the right place! The Adopt-a-Hydrant Program is a collaboration between the Grand Rapids Water System, Fire Department, and its citizens to keep our community’s hydrants clear of snow, ice, and tall grass. The Fire Department encounters the same problem every winter: snow around the hydrants delays the ability for crews to hook to those hydrants. The precious seconds they lose locating and clearing snow from a hydrant may make a difference in your emergency. Together, we can help keep our neighborhoods safe. Scroll down to enroll.
Individuals can adopt a single hydrant or multiple hydrants.
Groups and organizations are also welcome to adopt hydrants. A minimum of 5 hydrants is the requirement, but we encourage you to adopt as many as you can care for.
Use this map to select your hydrant.
You may type an address in the search bar or zoom in on the map to view the available hydrants (shown in yellow) in your desired area.
Write down the hydrant number to fill in on the application.
Make sure that you’ve read and agree to these guidelines(PDF, 176KB) in the application form.
You will receive an email confirmation of your adoption that will include program information including important guidelines for hydrant care. Adopting a hydrant is a yearly commitment. We will be in touch with you throughout the year and change of seasons.
Paper applications are not available for this program. Please follow the steps for completing the form online, over the phone, or in person.
