The Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department yesterday opened the winter recreation trails at Indian Trails Golf Course for the 2022-2023 season.

In the off-season, the City-owned golf course at 2776 Kalamazoo Ave SE, features a 3.7-mile fat tire bike loop and a 2-mile cross-country ski and snowshoe loop. The trail system is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weather permitting.

Visitors who wish to bring their own equipment can purchase a season pass at the clubhouse for $15. A season pass allows unlimited visits to the trail system for one person. Those who wish to rent equipment can do so at the clubhouse during open hours. Snowshoe rentals are $3 per pair and can accommodate a variety of sizes, from toddlers to adults up to 200 pounds. Fat tire bike rentals will be available starting Jan. 2 and are $20 per hour. Fat tire bikes can accommodate riders ranging from 5’1” to 6’4”.

The clubhouse is open and staffed daily for snowshoe rentals, fat tire bike rentals, and food and beverage purchases including craft beer, hot chocolate, and various hot food options. Clubhouse hours are as follows:

  • Mondays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursdays, noon to 8 p.m.
  • Fridays, noon to 8 p.m.
  • Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sundays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The clubhouse will be closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but gates will be open for bring-your-own equipment if weather permits.

The City’s Parks and Recreation Department will also host a family-friendly Winter Fest in partnership with their Thrive Outside division on Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include equipment demos, bonfires with s’mores and hotdogs, music, family activities, and more. More details will be available soon on the department’s Facebook page and website.

“Indian Trails Golf Course is a long-standing summer destination in our city,” David Marquart, the City’s Parks and Recreation Director said. “By transforming this space into a winter destination in the snowy months, we’re connecting even more community members to this historic public space in exciting new ways.”
