City announces Third Ward Vacancy Applicants, details appt. process

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –  The Grand Rapids City Commission today approved seven Third Ward Commissioner Vacancy Applicants to move on to a February 20 public interview before its Committee on Appointments. It also further detailed the appointment process.

The seven candidates, who passed the vetting process and will be considered, include:

  • Catherine Conklin
  • Bing Goei
  • Reginald Howard
  • Marshall Kilgore
  • John Krajewski
  • Barbara Snell
  • Al Willis

February 20 Applicant Interviews

The Commission’s Committee on Appointments will interview the seven applicants at a special 1 p.m. February 20 meeting. Each applicant will have 25 minutes to introduce themselves and answer a series of interview questions posed by Committee on Appointments members. The Committee on Appointments will then recommend three final candidates to the full City Commission.

March 5 Finalist Interviews

The selected top three candidates are expected to be interviewed by the full City Commission meeting in public session on Tuesday, March 5. The City Commission may make a decision at the 3:30 p.m. City Commission meeting.

The March 5 City Commission and subcommittees meeting schedule is as follows:

  • Committee on Appointments – 8 a.m.
  • Fiscal Committee – 8:15 a.m.
  • Community Development Committee – 8:45 a.m.
  • Committee of the Whole – 9:30 a.m. (Interviews begin at 11:30 a.m.)
  • City Commission – 3:30 p.m.

Please note, that to accommodate the interviews, the Public Safety Committee meeting on February 20 and the Economic Development Project Team meeting on March 5 are cancelled.

Public comment on the Third Ward Applicants will be welcomed at the February 20 evening meeting or March 5 afternoon meeting.  Public comments can also be emailed to Comcast Channel 26 and the City of Grand Rapids Facebook page and YouTube channel will broadcast/ live stream all Third Ward Commissioner Applicant interviews, and all City Commission and subcommittee meetings.

The Third Ward Commissioner appointment process was necessitated following the December 31 resignation of former Commissioner Nathaniel Moody.
