GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Commission of the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies Inc., or CALEA, has concluded the assessment portion of the Grand Rapids Police Department’s accreditation process and has provided the City with its findings.

The findings, listed in a May 8 Assessment Report, represent observations and findings from CALEA’s most recent standards-based review of the organization. The next stage of CALEA accreditation requires a Review Committee Hearing in late July.

In the report, CALEA Team Leader Scott Cunningham writes, “GRPD is a full-service police agency that focuses on delivering high quality services to the community and its citizens. They have a foundational philosophy of community oriented policing that is focused on working with the community in a service oriented and transparent manner to enhance the overall quality of life for everyone.

“Training and support of agency personnel is extremely high. The volume and variety of outreach, community interaction, education, and crime prevention programs offered and conducted by the agency is exceptionally high.  GRPD is truly a community oriented, citizen focused police agency that is striving to deliver the highest degree of services possible.”

The Grand Rapids Police Department voluntarily entered this process with the goal of meeting or exceeding professional accreditation standards. The accreditation process includes a complete review of the police department’s polices as they relate to more than 140 CALEA standards. Onsite CALEA assessors met with personnel of all ranks, community leaders, stakeholders and many others. The assessors also observed operations, conducted ride-alongs with officers and interviewed Unit Commanders throughout the GRPD.

Chief David Rahinsky said is proud of the findings, stating, ”This report is reflective of the quality and caliber of our men and women, sworn and civilian, that serve this community every day.”
