Comptroller Sara Vander Werff was elected in November 2013 for a four year term, and took office in April 2013 to complete the term that expired that year. Prior to joining the City, Vander Werff served in the banking industry as a trust advisor and fiduciary management, and practiced law for 11 years.
Vander Werff is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association, the International Bar Association, the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, and the Polish Falcons Ladies Auxiliary. She serves on the board of the Grand Rapids Chapter of Serra International, and enjoys substitute teaching with the Grand Rapids Bar Association 3Rs (Rights, Responsibilities, Realties) Program at Ottawa High School.
Vander Werff received her J.D. from Wayne State University Law School, Detroit; has a B.B.A. in Accountancy from St. Joseph’s College, Rensselaer, Indiana; and graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School.
Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Vander Werff has made Grand Rapids her permanent home and residence, and is pleased to have this opportunity to serve the City.
