Brownfield Redevelopment Authority

Overview

The Grand Rapids Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (BRA) helps redevelop blighted or contaminated properties.

We can provide tax increment financing to help pay for some redevelopment project costs.


Property Eligibility

Your property may be eligible if any of the following apply:

  • Contaminated
  • Blighted
  • Functionally obsolete
  • Historic resource


Activity Eligibility

The following activities are eligible for reimbursement:

  • Demolition
  • Asbestos abatement
  • Due care and environmental response activities
  • Site preparation 
  • Public infrastructure improvements
  • Ramped and underground parking
  • Urban stormwater management systems

Deadlines

Make sure you take plenty of time to plan and prepare your application. After you submit your application, give enough time for staff to review. The BRA and Michigan strategic Fund have deadlines for you to file your application. Make sure you meet these deadlines to be considered for a particular month's agenda.

Environmental Site Assessment Funding

The BRA tries to get funding for environmental site assessments on an ongoing basis. Since 2008, the BRA has been awarded more than $1.1 million to fund environmental site assessments on more than 60 properties throughout Grand Rapids. Check out the instructions for filing an application for grant funding here.

Current available funding: 

We got a $1,000,000 Revolving Loan Fund Grant Award from the U.S. EPA. We also got a supplemental award of $260,000. We may have funding available to help finance due care and remediation expenses.
