The City Commission appointed Stephanie McMillen to serve as acting city clerk on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. She had served as deputy city clerk since March 2015.
McMillen’s career in public administration began 19 years ago when she was appointed deputy city clerk for the city of Coopersville in Ottawa County. She was appointed to the position of Coopersville City Clerk four years later and held that office for the next seven years. In 2001, McMillen was appointed to serve as deputy township clerk for Plainfield Township in Kent County.
In 2014, she began assisting the City of Grand Rapids with election worker training, specifically on the e-pollbook software and election day process, prior to being appointed deputy city clerk.
McMillen is challenged with executing the day-to-day operations in the urgently paced and ever-changing environment of the Clerk’s Office. She displays leadership, expertise in project management, and critical thinking and assessment in her role as acting city clerk/deputy city clerk. She also is responsible for coordinating, planning and supporting the daily operational and administrative functions of the office.
McMillen is a Certified Municipal Clerk through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) and a Certified Michigan Municipal Clerk through the Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks (MAMC), She is also an active member of the MAMC, IIMC, West Michigan Regional Clerks Association and the Kent County Clerks Association.
